Disciples by Supernatural Grace
Oswald
Chambers: “Our
Lord’s making of a disciple is super natural. He does not build on any natural
capacity at all. God does not ask us to do the things that are easy to us
naturally; He only asks us to do the things we are perfectly fitted to do by
his grace, and the cross will come along that line always.” (My Utmost for His Highest)
The things God asks us to do are not always easy. They
are not always convenient. They are not always pretty. But nonetheless, He
still asks us to do them. God has called each of us to minister to someone,
somewhere. We don’t get to chose who, and we certainly don’t get to chose
where.
Maybe there’s a coworker he is laying on your heart to
share with. It could be spelling out the gospel message to them, or it could
simply be letting them know that you are there, that someone is on their side.
Maybe there’s a family member who is having a difficult time, and simply needs
a hug. Maybe there’s a neighbor kid who has an absent father and needs someone
to teach him how to shoot hoops. Maybe God is asking you to be the embodiment
of His love to those around you. Maybe He’s putting a need in front of you, and
He wants you to fill it.
Or maybe it’s something bigger. Maybe God is calling you
overseas. Maybe he is calling you to lay down everything you know to follow him
to the unknown. Maybe he is calling you to step out of the boat and trust that
you will walk, and not sink, on the water.
Whatever he is calling us to do, he is giving the grace
to accomplish it. He will supply the airplane ticket, He will produce the
basketball, He will provide the time and resources. If you will only let him. And that, that stepping out in faith and following
his call, is what makes us a disciple. The twelve did not simply sit on their
couch reading a book or watching a documentary about Jesus’ great works. They followed
his calling, and they got to witness it firsthand; He gave them the grace they
needed to do so. In their faith, they became disciples by God’s supernatural
grace.
